Panem et Circenses! Football is back, pass the chips! Madden NFL 12 Data Report

Coffee Beans
Madden NFL 12 was released on August 30, 2011 for the Wii at a MSRP of $49.99. The game was developed by HB Studios and published by the EA Sports division of Electronic Arts. The game received an ESRB rating of "Everyone" with no content descriptors listed for gamers and parents to be aware of.

With the college football season having started last weekend, and now the NFL season officially starting up tonight, I figured now would be a good time to look at how many hours U.S. Wii owners have reported playing Madden NFL 12 since it released last year. So, brew yourself some coffee, and let's take a look!

The Brew
Madden NFL 12 has 618,000 Total Hours of game-play reported, from approximately 19,290 U.S. Wii owners that have reported data through the Nintendo Channel since the game released last year. The average play-time per day/session is 2 Hours 2 Minutes, with the overall average play-time being 32 Hours 2 Minutes "Per person" as shown above.

What about critic and customer review scores for Madden NFL 12? The game has a "professional" critic review score average of 75.00%, based on just 3 reviews on GameRankings.com. The customer review score average is 74.44%, based on 36 reviews from Amazon.com.

Caffeinated Thoughts
The 2012 NFL season has officially kicked off tonight (just about 45 minutes ago now), with the Giants playing the Cowboys. The last NFL video game game I purchased was in July 2004. After that purchase, due to EA signing the exclusivity contract with the NFL, I have not purchased another NFL video game since; though I have played a few and I believe I have Madden NFL 09 in my PlayStation 3 collection that a friend gave to me.

If you have not seen what Madden NFL 12 looked like for the Wii last year, the video below will give you a look at the different graphical style the developer went with for the Wii version:

Though Mrs. Coffee and I don't have cable television, I do play in an ESPN NFL Fantasy Football league and have done so for about the last 4 years. While I won't watch many (if any) of the games this NFL season, I will keep track of most of them each week because of the league.

As for the reported data, seeing Madden NFL 12 having more than 30 hours averaged "Per person" in just over a year I think is pretty good, especially considering it was the 6th Madden NFL Wii game to be released for the system.

If you're wondering about the title, have you read The Hunger Games book series? If not, I suggest giving them a read. You can buy the entire book series HERE, so there's no need to delay anymore, then the title might make a little more sense.

Questions
Did any of you play Madden NFL 12 for the Wii, or even other consoles, and did you think it was a solid Madden game? Did it do anything better, or worse, than previous games in the Madden series? If you played Madden NFL 12, or perhaps even just purchased Madden NFL 13, is the Madden NFL series one that you purchase every single year?

Also, if you're a football fan, do you have a favorite NFL team you are cheering for and hoping makes it to Super Bowl XLVII?

Answering my own question, as I often do in real life...
My favorite NFL team is the Tennessee Titans. I actually used to like the Titans when they were the Houston Oilers. When they relocated I stuck with them. They have had some crazy seasons and QB issues over the last few years though.

  2. You had to know I'd show up to comment in this one, right Coffee? :)

To the Madden 12 question: I actually did play it - for the PS3 - and thought it was probably one of their worst releases in years. The audio in particular was a mess at times.

To the question of yearly purchases: I am one of those people who has purchased about 90% of the yearly releases since Madden first came out. I even used to pick it up yearly for my Sega Genesis a zillion years ago.

For me, on the current generation of consoles, it's all about the PS3. The visuals on the Wii are weaker than the 360/PS3 counterpart, and the online doesn't feel as well-fleshed out either (I have a friend with it for the Wii, and I just don't come away as impressed), but the Madden series became a multiplayer staple for my friends and me back in college. We have an online franchise set up right now in fact - they have PS3's - so for me that is the version that gets the nod now.

I am in 3 different Fantasy Football leagues right now. 1 ESPN one with my co-workers, and 2 Yahoo! ones (one with family and one with some of the players on my MUD).

Favorite NFL Team? The Lions. So - out of curiosity - how closely do you track the Titans? Your old defensive coordinator is now our head coach. I think he's done a good job - any thoughts of your own on him? We've also come away with a couple of your recent defenders.

  3. Only 90%? No wonder EA is having so many issues, fans like you not being real and purchasing them every year!

You know what I think? Haters gonna hate! The visuals being "weaker" simply means a different graphical style was chosen...not that they are "weaker". My Wii is playing games in 1080p on my 32in TUBE television. You might just need to check your setup.

"I am in 3 different Fantasy Football leagues right now."
LOL, I know others like you. I did 2 leagues a few years back, but have stuck with just one now. I even resisted the temptation to join another one this year.

"So - out of curiosity - how closely do you track the Titans?"
I try to keep up with the player information mainly during the season, but even in the off-season I'll read articles on them if I see them posted.

As for our old defensive coordinator moving to the Lions, and "We've also come away with a couple of your recent defenders.", it's called POACHING! The worst of the worst, and you will see what happens to poachers on September 23rd.

  4. ROFL - looking forward to that sept 23rd. Kind of curious about our season opener against Fisher and his new Rams squad too. We're out like 2/3 of our starting secondary this week, so I'm a bit nervous on that front.

I definitely think the Wii has some pretty games out there, but most of the time when I am playing the same Wii game on the PS3, the PS3 version generally looks better in terms of detail and framerate (mind you, I've only seen a few examples like sports titles, etc) - but my Wii, 360 and PS3 are all hooked up to the same 1080p tv, HDMI for the 360/PS3, component for the Wii. In a game where they are pushing realism, the different art direction chosen to compensate for the weaker processing is something of note to me I guess. That said, games like Metroid or Mario still tend to look amazing.

  5. "I definitely think the Wii has some pretty games out there..."
Haha! I was joking about it, just had to justify it with the different art style.

"In a game where they are pushing realism..."
    I will just point out...
    1) Holograms on the sideline
    2) Balls that fly to the roof
    3) Holograms on the sideline
    4) Cardboard audience from the SNES version

  6. I wonder if anyone else has seen a ball rise to the roof? I really haven't seen too many crazy Madden 13 glitches - and definitely none like the one I found and thankfully sought to save.

Also? My son's been needling me about Hunger Games. He has all 3, has read them at least twice each, so while I don't get the reference yet, I suspect I will at some point, lol

They will after my weekend Madden post, "Why Madden NFL 13 if fail! Video shows it all!"

It'll be up to 1 billion views, and you'll get a cease and desist letter from EA, and they'll have YouTube shut your account DOWN; because they made a glitchy game. :)
