September 2010 - PS3 Slim & PS3 Move Bundle Console Sales Ranks

Brewed Info:
     The chart is not designed to replace, or even predict, NPD numbers for September, but is designed to be a visual aid and hopefully a good supplement to give us an idea of what the sales breakdown may be within the PS3 console Skus.
     Remember when looking at the chart, the higher the line is on the chart, the better the sales ranks were for the consoles.

Click chart to enlarge

Coffee Beans(what makes up the chart):
     The chart above shows the sales ranks for the 160GB PS3 priced at $299.99, and the 320GB PS3 Move bundle priced at $399.99, during the month of September.  The sales ranks were recorded on Amazon.com with the dates and times recorded, when each sales rank was captured, on 17 different days in September.
     The sales ranks were captured between September 3 and September 29, 2010.  The highlighted days on the chart, from September 18 through September 29, are days that reflect when the 320GB PS3 Move bundle was actually available for purchase, not just "pre-order".

Highs & Lows:
     The highest recorded sale rank for the 160GB PS3 was #12, on September 3 around 11:45PM.
     The lowest recorded sale rank for the 160GB PS3 was #25, on September 29 around 4:55PM.

     The highest recorded sale rank for the 320GB PS3 Move bundle was #19, on September 18 around 11:00PM.
     The lowest recorded sale rank for the 320GB PS3 Move bundle was #102, on September 3 around 11:45PM.

Thoughts:
     September 2010 was an interesting month for consoles.  Sony released the new Sony 320GB PS3 Move bundle for $399.99, on September 17, and Microsoft had three consoles available for purchase in September: the Xbox 360 4GB, Xbox 360 250GB, and the 250GB Halo: Reach bundle(available on September 14).
     While we don't know the official NPD numbers for September yet, I think it will be interesting to see if they give an estimate for how the Sony Move bundle for $99.99, and the console bundle, sold during September.

Questions:
     Have any of you played with the PS3 Move controller and Navigation controller?  If so, what do you think of it from what you have played?  If you haven't played it, is the Move something you are interested in picking up for your PS3?
     I am interested in the controllers, just to see how well they perform in FPS games on the PS3.  I was in Best Buy earlier this week, and saw they had the PS3 Move on display.  I couldn't figure out how to navigate the PS3 menu using just the Move controller, so I was stuck with watching a demo video; not actually playing any demo.

You can see prices for the 160GB and 320GB PS3s, as well as the Sony Move game bundle and PlayStation Move Navigation Controller on Amazon.com linked below:

  1. I am a Wii and PS3 owner and will concede that what Sony is offering is a better and more precise solution to motion gaming. But two factors hold me back from diving in.

    1. Games: So far nothing the move is offering is a must have or too different that what the Wii could emulate. I already have a motion gaming set up. Thanks.

    I am surprised how up the bundle made it in the ranks though. So far the only new tech that has my eye is the 3DS.

    2. cost: Not that the pricing is overly outrageous, but its an add on. The wii came with it all in the box. New PS3 owners may be enticed and most likely the predominate customers.

  3. I've had a PS3 since 2007 and it recently got YLOD. I bought a Move PS3 bundle this month and a navigation controller and I am amazed at how well it works. If done properly like in RE5 Gold Edition, the move/navigation controller combo works better than the Dualshock 3. The tech is great, now it's up to the devs to make some amazing games to use it with.

    @ Brad. Don't say the move has no must have launch games if you haven't played them all. I concider the both Sports Champions and RE5 Gold Edition must haves. I was mad at capcom for making the move support for only the Gold Edition when I bought my copy day 1 for $60. I got back at capcom by selling my copy and using the money to buy Gold Edition used and it is the best game for Move right now IMO.

  5. @ Alex. I must have misspoke. I was just explaining personally there wasn't anything there for me that is a must have title. I would agree that the nunchuck/remote option does work well for shooters, and I have that on the Wii right now. Just nothing there yet makes me want to drop 100 bucks for the bundle.

  6. I am a long time Wii owner and I played move over at a friends house. I can safely say that its precision is its downfall. yes its precise but if I have to throw my arm out just to get a gold medal on Sports Champions then its not at all worth it! I'm a skinny guy, I don't need exercise, how are you going to beat the game if the simplest most redundant moves make you arm tired after half and hour?
    I've played wii sports resort for eight straight hours, I wouldn't dare try that with the Move. PLay need to start telling use their medal status on Sports champions because I don't think they are playing for very long.
    The pointer lags abit too and the menu controls for some of the games are not consistent. I want to point at the screen and click stuff but nooooo. Hopefully in the future the software averages out between exercise machine and gaming controler. If you never played the wii before then The move will be new ground for you but for the millions in Wii land; Precision does not equal fun. But right now I give it a 7 for poorly inplemented Wii Clone.

    "Precision" is actually what makes Move so much fun for PS3 core gamers. I am playing Sports Champion right now. have you? The Move actually inspires you to improve your playing skills just like in real life. And it does give you the body conditioning like a real sport games does.

    For the casual games, the Move's AI actually assist or help the players 'round-off' their actual movements to make them games playable. But not like how you do it with the Wii's random waggle, no. For the Move you still have to do it.

    Sorry, but the Move hardware lag you say you see is actually your TV screen 'display lag' specially LCD TVs. Every one knows that, even at 60Hz refresh LCD screens have a a hardtime keeping up with fast on-screen movements.

    If you are a Wii player your brain needs a lot of 'unlearning' to do because the Wii conditioned your mind to think you are actually doing it even if you are doing just random waggling.

    But not on the Move it does not teach you to be lazy but to actually do it. And right now we are enjoying the Move specually the non-gamer members of the family.

  8. I've been checking my local Best Buy like once a week to see if they have a PS3 and Move kiosk set up yet. Still nothing.

    I'm very interested in trying it, to see how it compares for both pointing and motion controls to the Wii with Wii Motion Plus. I'd also like to squish that ball a few times.

    I think the way they're selling it, is odd. I wish they would bundle the Navigate controller, with the package; not separately. $100 for both to get started wouldn't be bad, but the extra $30 feels like nickel and diming to me.

    @Anonymous from October 7, 2010 @ 6:44PM:
    Thanks! I actually was hitting all the buttons on the Move controller, and now that you and others mentioned it...I did notice the menu seemed to move when I had hit the trigger button, but I kept looking for an onscreen reticule like the Wii has.

    @alex:
    "The tech is great, now it's up to the devs to make some amazing games to use it with."
    I have really enjoyed the Wii Remote and Nunchuk use in FPS games, but how long it took a company to FINALLY do fully customizable controls was ridiculous(2.5 years after the system released).
    I think Sony will be more willing to pay 3rd Parties for support, than Nintendo has on the Wii; which is one reason I have hope the Move will turn out well over the long-run.

    @Anonymous from October 7, 2010 @ 7:52PM:
    I played the M.A.G. demo, but it's a game that seems to require a solid number of people playing continuously for you to experience everything the game can offer. Does M.A.G. still have a good number of people playing, enough to get into full battles?

    @Brad Jerger:
    If Call of Duty: Black Ops was announced to use the Sony Move and Navigation controllers, would that be a game that would cause you to purchase it?

    @owen:
    "The pointer lags abit too and the menu controls for some of the games are not consistent. I want to point at the screen and click stuff but nooooo."
    The pointer lagging is what I'm interested in, to see how well if functions in FPS games. Also, the lack of an onscreen reticule is interesting, because that's what I was looking for at the BestBuy kiosk, and didn't realize it was just movement based on the main menu.

    @rowell:
    "If you are a Wii player your brain needs a lot of 'unlearning' to do because the Wii conditioned your mind to think you are actually doing it even if you are doing just random waggling."
    I would say the "waggling" depends on the game, and the use. WM+ was/is supposed to help solve some waggling, but it really just comes down to developers deciding which input works best for the majority of gamers.
    I would be interested to see how Tiger Woods with Move, compares to Tiger Woods with WM+. Since both are "motion" based games, I would think you could tell which one is a more "accurate" use of the motion input. I wonder why none of the large gaming sites have done that yet...

    Also, does the Wii pointer have lag on 60Hz LCD tvs? I have never researched it, because I'm using a 19" SDT for most of my gaming.

    "I've been checking my local Best Buy like once a week to see if they have a PS3 and Move kiosk set up yet. Still nothing."
    I don't know when the Best Buy I went in put it up, but now that I know how to navigate the menu, I may go back and try a few demos.

    Thank you all for the comments and feedback so far! Any PS3 owners that play online, my PSN name is Hoj_Latte if you want to look me up.

  10. @Coffee, No Black ops isn't enough for me either... if all the other FPS's I bought in the past were patch you use the move then I might think about it. I'm still looking for something really unique to come up. Maybe a Heavy Rain style game with the motion controls built in from the ground up instead of patched in later.

    Also if you want to know about Tiger Woods and how it feels compared to Wii.. Talk to Den.. he played it at E3 and from what he experienced he didnt notice a difference.
