Metroid: Other M - Data Debut

Quick Brew Info:
Metroid: Other M was released on the Nintendo Wii on August 31, 2010, and Metroid: Other M released with a MSRP of $49.99.  It was developed by Team Ninja, and published by Nintendo.

It took 14 days for Metroid: Other M's play-time data to debut on the Wii's Nintendo Channel.  So, in the last 2-weeks, how much have Wii owners been playing Metroid: Other M?  Let's take a look...

Approx. Number of Players Reporting Data:
Metroid: Other M has 11,428 players reporting their play-time data, for its debut on the Nintendo Channel.

"Total" Game-Play & Average Hours Played Reported:
Metroid: Other M has 112,376 Total Hours reported for its debut, with a 9 hours 51 minutes average play-time per person reporting data.

The average play-time per session for Metroid: Other M is just under three hours, sitting at about 2 hours 50 minutes per play session.

Sale Rank & Advertised Price:
Metroid: Other M's sale rank is #56 and is selling for $48.93 on Amazon.com.

Review Score Averages:
Metroid: Other M's review score average is 78.01%, based on 39 "professional" reviews on GameRankings.com.

On Amazon.com, Metroid: Other M has about a 3.5 out of 5 Star rating, based on 71 customer reviews.
What would you rate Metroid: Other M?
Thoughts:
I have not purchased or played Metroid: Other M yet, but I have a friend that has offered to mail me his copy after he finishes it, so I can try it.  I may take him up on that offer, once I finish a few more games!

I think the sales rank of Metroid: Other M on Amazon.com does show that the sales for the game look to have dropped off considerably, for what I would think is a "core" Nintendo franchise game.  I don't know if Nintendo plans to continue advertising Metroid: Other M any during the Christmas season this year, or if the live-action commercial is the only one they plan on showing, but I think it will be interesting to see how sales continue for it in the next few months.
If you didn't see the live-action commercial for Metroid: Other M, you can watch it right here!

As for the play-time hours, it seems the average play-time per person reported is about how long the single-player campaign for Metroid: Other M takes to complete(9 hours, from what I have read).  I would imagine most of the users reporting play-time data for Metroid: Other M have already finished the main campaign, and may now be trying to get 100% in it.

Questions:
Did anybody here purchase Metroid: Other M, and if so, how much have you played it?  If you have completed the campaign, do you see Metroid: Other M as a game that you will play multiple times? Or, is once enough?

  1. I recently got it, and I think I'll beat it once, again for completion, then shelve it for awhile.
Some parts of the game are brilliant; others make no sense. I generally play for around an hour at a time, trying to make it last longer.

  2. I'm very interested, but honestly I should not spend any money on new games right now. There's virtually no progress on my backlog and I play way too little to justify even getting a game I really want.

Which makes me worrying about too short a playtime for Other M just a bit ironic I guess.

  3. I picked the game up the other day - Gamestop had a pretty good deal going where any trade in toward the game got an extra 40%, and another deal where having 3 games yielded $10 extra, 5 games $20 extra. I had some extra games on hand, and picked this up with another game pretty cheaply. Haven't had a chance to play it yet - hoping to settle in with it this weekend or next though. I suspect I'll play through it once, my son through it once and likely trade it in while it still has some retail value. I haven't seen any copies of it used on the shelf yet so I don't think many people are 'done' with it yet, but I suspect we'll see it show up a bit more frequently on shelves over the next 2 or 3 weeks.

Depending on how often you play, it could last a good while for you; especially if you are going for 100%.

I LOLed at this. My backlog is at about five games right now, but I am one to gripe about playtime!

Well, I hope you enjoy it, and I look forward to your thoughts on the game!

Thank you all for the comments! Has anybody else purchased Metroid: Other M, and have you been playing it?

  5. I will be purchasing Metroid: Other M in the very, very near future(I can't wait to see what Kuniaki Haishima has composed for Other M and as a result contributed to the Metroid franchise as a whole).

I'd also like to point out a fantastic "review" (playtest actually) for Metroid: Other M for people who might be on the fence with this game. http://www.siliconera.com/2010/08/29/metroid-other-m-playtest/
It's great when reviewers write about what the game actually provides instead of taking the "what the game isn't, but should have been" route
(just in case, it would be best to avoid the comments section in said article).

Also, NOA did an amazing job for making such a great and most importantly, effective commercial. You get a real sense of what the game might be about and what to expect of it's gameplay. NOA's effort at advertising Metroid: Other M(which I believe was successful in the end) I think can be considered to be the exact opposite to the way Ubisoft ultimately handled Red Steel 2's marketing(as a whole) which was, IMHO, a blatantly ineffective way of advertising Red Steel 2.

  6. Since I picked up halo:reach this week too, I have a 'busy' weekend ahead as I want to try both titles. Interesting question for those who have played it - there's two 'issues' with the game that even IGN went so far as to talk about -

    http://wii.ign.com/articles/112/1121498p1.html

The first made it into their Metroid M guide in fact - but apparently there's a bug where one of the doors that needs to open for story progression can get into a state where it won't open - requiring the player to go from an earlier save or start over. There's been a lot of post and forum activity on this bug, to the point where people are saying Nintendo is aware of the bug - but that they don't do version/patch updates like Xbox 360 and PS3 do - if that turns out to be the case, is that an interesting Wii limitation you don't really hear discussed much?

The other issue is quite a few people are reporting that after they run the latest Wii firmware update, their versions of Other M no longer read in the drive, but their other games work fine. I thought these were interesting, so I'd toss them in here, see if anyone else has seen/heard of these.

  7. I heard of the door glitch, don't think I'm far enough yet, though.

Game's great. Took a bit of getting used to, combat wise, but man does it feel great once it "clicks".

There's a ton of controversy about this game, and that only served to strengthen my desire to go and get it in the past couple of days. I love new things and the dust cloud this game raised when the reviews finally hit had that sweet smell I've been waiting for.

Here's a video I saw today that aligns closely to my own views about pretty much everything that's been said about the game.

Should be spoiler free, just some minor plot discussion.

  8. I did not purchase it (birthday gift), but I am playing it. About 5 hours of play time so far.

I can definitely see myself playing through the game again after a year or so.

I agree about Ubisoft's advertising campaign for Red Steel 2, the initial commercial they ran probably didn't help them reach the audience they were going for, and didn't do anything to reach the "expanded" audience on the Wii.

    @Chalgyr:
I have heard about the door glitch and the system update glitch, though I don't know if the system update glitch was ever confirmed. The door glitch has been confirmed, and yea, Nintendo probably can't fix it, due to them not programming the game for patches...though they are possible on the Wii. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Reflex I believe has been patched a few times, and Call of Duty: World at War even had a few multiplayer modes added after it was released on Wii...nothing major though.

Yea, the controversy with all the positive/negative talk going on about the game has me interested to play it.

    @WesFX:
    Happy late birthday!

Thank you all for the comments and thoughts, and I hope you all enjoy the game as you play through it!
