WiiWare Wednesday! Mega Man 9 - How many hours have U.S. Wii owners reported playing?

Coffee Beans
Mega Man 9 was released for Nintendo's WiiWare service on September 22, 2008, in the U.S., at a $10 price point. The game was co-developed by Inti Creates and Capcom, with Capcom publishing it. It received an ESRB rating of "EVERYONE" with only "Mild Cartoon Violence" listed as content for parents and gamers to be aware of.

How many U.S. Wii owners have reported playing Mega Man 9 since it released, and how many hours have they reported playing it with 1,624 days of data possibly reported? Brew yourself some coffee, and let's take a look!

Data shown is for U.S. Wii owners, not world-wide.

The Brew
Mega Man 9 has approximately 68,115 U.S. Wii owners that have gameplay data reported through the Nintendo Channel, and the average play-time per day/session is just over 50 Minutes.

As the image above shows, Mega Man 9 has almost 700,000 Total Hours of gameplay reported, which makes it the most played Mega Man game on the Wii, based on the Total Hours reported.

Like all other WiiWare titles, customer reviews are not available for the game directly on the console, but the game does have an 8.1 out of 10 "User Score", based on 45 ratings on Metacritic.com. The WiiWare version of Mega Man 9 has a "professional" critic review score average of 84.04%, based on 28 reviews on GameRankings.com.

The U.S. WiiWare release of Mega Man 9 has made Capcom about $681,150 (before taxes and profit sharing) over the last 4 years, just based on the number of players that have data reported and the game's $10 price point.

Caffeinated Thoughts
I mentioned in 2010 that I had never played any Mega Man game for any length of time. Now that we are 2013, that unfortunately still has not changed.

If you are not familiar with Mega Man 9, it is categorized as an "Action, Platformer", and below you can see a video Capcom used to help promote the game back in 2008:

Being that I really enjoy platforming games, I don't know why (other than my cheapness) that I don't own any of the Mega Man games. Hopefully, Nintendo gets the Wii U's Virtual Console and eShop issue straightened out quickly. Perhaps after they figure it out, I will look at purchasing a Mega Man game and be able to play it on just the Wii U GamePad, as I have come to enjoy that feature for several Wii U games already.
I would buy it for 30 cents, IF that were to somehow magically happen.

Questions
If you have played Mega Man 9, do you know how many hours you played the game? Also, if you're a fan of the series, do you hope Capcom continues the Mega Man series; perhaps with a retro-styled Mega Man 11, or maybe with a totally different styled Mega Man game?

  1. Hey coffee, haven't posted in a while. I forget how I used to log in here, but you may remember me as the guy who won the mug, some instant coffee and a Luigi fig.
Anyway, the first MegaMan game I ever bought was MegaMan V, I remember it well. I had some money saved up and was determined to buy a game during a family trip to the mall. I'd heard good things about the first three games, and back then, a higher number at the end of a sequel always made that the better game. So I got what is widely regarded as one of the worst MegaMans, and I loved it.

I don't think MegaMan 9 is eligible for the $0.30 since its not a Virtual Console game, but a WiiWare game. But, when they get around to them, I'd definitely recommend either MegaMan 2 or 3. I ended up getting 3 after beating 9 and also really enjoyed it.

I haven't gotten 10 yet either, but I'd still be interested if they kept doing them. Games of this ilk are just timeless for me.

Quick aside: do you have a 3DS? If so, get a game called Gunman Clive off of the eShop for $1.99. It's a MegaMan set in the wild west with call backs to pretty much every 2d platformer I've ever enjoyed.

  2. I got MM 9 and 10 as PS+ titles awhile back, but I haven't played them yet. Platforming is something I loved back in the NES days, but I do not play so much now.

I have actually only played 3 of the Mega Man titles - 1, 2 and 3. 2 was my favorite - I was REALLY good at it once upon a time, though it's been years since I touched it.

Well, I used to use Blogger's default comment section, but changed it to Disqus last year sometime. So, the previous log-in wouldn't be the same, but you can make the username the same I believe.

"So I got what is widely regarded as one of the worst MegaMans, and I loved it."

I always find it interesting how if you don't expect a game to be bad (from reviews), you may enjoy it. It's one reason I try to actually avoid reviews on games I know I'll be buying.

"I don't think MegaMan 9 is eligible for the $0.30 since its not a Virtual Console game, but a WiiWare game."

Yeah, there are the original Mega Man games on the Virtual Console though, and if Nintendo could get one of those down to $0.30 that would be awesome. I wonder if Capcom might bundle Mega Man 9/10 together, at a reduced type price, or if they aren't even worried with it now.

As for having a 3DS, I don't. I have heard about Gunman Clive though, and apparently a lot of people are liking it. I'm guessing the game did well enough here though, because it's already being picked up to release in Japan, which I don't think happens very often with U.S. eShop games.

Thanks for the comment and feedback though, and for dropping back by!

  4. "I have actually only played 3 of the Mega Man titles - 1, 2 and 3."

I believe all of these are on the Virtual Console (can't remember now if I saw 3, but I think it was). Perhaps we should petition Capcom to release an updated Mega Man collection, like Nintendo sort of did with the Super Mario Bros. and Kirby Wii collections...

On getting MM 9 and 10 as PS+ titles, were those free, or just at discounted rates?

Thanks for the comment and feedback!

  5. I believe I bought MegaMan 9 in 2011, though have only put in maybe 5-10 hours. It's a pretty rough go when your platforming reflexes are out of shape, but still an overall fun game. Some of the achievements are basically insane unless you want to devote your life to this game. I also can't remember what the DLC options are, but remember that it didn't seem worth it.

As for developing MM11, I'm not really sure. The general sense I get is that MM10 didn't quite hit the mark and pushed the difficulty too far at times. I'd check out HVGN's review of both. (Derek Alexander)

I too hope they get the VC and eShop situation beefed up for the Wii U as playing on the gamepad is also a huge feature for me. I don't see myself considering a purchase until that happens.

I believe MM 1-5 are on VC along with X and X2 (SNES) whereas MM9 and 10 are WiiWare. Though MM1-5 are also coming to the 3DS eShop soon as well.

For Gunman Clive: Yeah, it's awesome. Just enough Megaman and Contra to keep it interesting, but not punishing.

    Still incomplete, I'm guessing?

As for the Virtual Console ones, I remember seeing the first few and X, not sure about X2.

"Though MM1-5 are also coming to the 3DS eShop soon as well."

Do you know how much those will be listed for by any chance?

  7. Yep, always incomplete. Think I've only beaten one or two bosses.

X2 was released this past June so it's pretty recent.. and surprising since they've abandoned Wii VC.

For the 3DS eShop MM 1 and 2 are out and they are $4.99.

  8. I bought Mega Man 9 the day it released on Wiiware and loved it! Although, to be honest (and I'm ashamed to say :P) I haven't beaten it yet. I'm at the last few stages at Dr. Wily's lair, but unfortunately can't beat it! I'm too weak :P, but I think one day I will if I just sit down and concentrate. To be honest, I think I've put less than 5 hours into the game, which is probably why I have yet to best it!

I was able to accomplish Mega Man 10 thankfully due to it's easy mode.

I would love a Mega Man 11, but either in a style like Mega Man 7 or 8 or even a non-chibi'd Mega Man Powered Up. I like me some retro games just fine, but I think it's nice to have variety!

  9. I think I saw there are a few more MM titles heading to the 3DS eShop here soon, but the prices being at $5 each doesn't seem to shabby.

Yeah, changing things up can help keep things fresh. Too much of a good thing, can be a bad thing, and I think developers/publishers try their best to find a happy-medium with it.

Not sure if you have played Mutant Mudds, but my time with that game sounds like your time in Mega Man 9. I had to sit, and make it a goal to beat the last few levels, not just play them.

Thanks for the comment and feedback!

  11. Yeah, I've played Mutant Mudds, and I gotta do just about the same thing! I beat the main game and what not, but then the DLC levels came out and I haven't beaten all of those yet because they're quite a challenge!

  12. I think MM3 releases this week [or very soon] then 4 and 5 are on the way in April/May.
