FPS Friday - Greg Hastings Paintball 2 PS3 Footage

Coffee Beans:
Many of you may have seen some of my coverage for Greg Hastings Paintball 2 (GHP2) on the Wii over the last several months.  Well last week on June 14, Greg Hastings Paintball 2 released on the PlayStation Network and is available for $19.99.
The game was developed by Super X Studios, and published by Majesco Entertainment.  GHP2 received an "Everyone 10+" rating from the ESRB, with "Language, Violence" listed as content for gamers/parents to be aware of.

For those of you that haven't seen any footage of Greg Hastings Paintball 2, the video below contains one round of a "RaceTo" match that a friend and I played together cooperatively through the PlayStation Network.  While we played some matches against each other, the video below is of us being on the same team battling against a team of AI opponents.

FPS Friday Interview - Part II Q&A with Greg Hastings

Coffee Beans:
You can read Part I of the interview I posted last week with Greg Hastings HERE.

*Editor's note:  The very first question below was in regards to Greg Hastings Paintball 2's release date on the PS3, I have contacted Greg and Super X Studios on the issue of the release date, since the PSN crash has caused its release to be delayed.

Interview Questions & Answers with Greg Hastings - Part II
*CoffeeWithGames:  The PS3 version of the game saw some delays, but is expected to be releasing on the PS3 through the PlayStation Network.  Does the PS3 version have a solid release date, or release week window; and what price will PS3 owners be looking at to purchase the game?

*Greg Hastings:  May 10th is the date that I'm told!  Sony makes ya jump through hoops, but in the end it assures quality, which I appreciate.  I'm not sure on the price, but this version has some extras that are not found in the 360 or Wii versions.

FPS Friday! Greg Hastings Paintball 2 Interview with Greg Hastings!

Coffee Beans:
If you missed Part I or Part II of the interview about Greg Hastings Paintball 2, you can read them HERE and HERE.
In Part I and Part II, I interviewed James Thrush the President of Super X Studios which was behind the development of Greg Hastings Paintball 2.

As the title for this post says, the questions below were answered by Greg Hastings himself.  I'll keep it short with four questions this week, and some more next week.

Interview Questions and Answers with Greg Hastings - Part I
CoffeeWithGames:  First, thanks for taking the time for the interview.  Can you tell the readers a little about how you got started in paintball, and how that lead to pitching the idea for creating a paintball video game?

Greg Hastings:  The same way many have started.  A friend took me to play back in 1987 and the adrenaline rush was immediately captivating!  I was playing Kelly Slater Pro Surfer with my buddy Stephen 10 years ago.  I knew the participation of paintball and was mad that no one [had] taken our sport serious enough to make a console game supporting it.  Shooters were hot from the word go, and hello, paintball IS a shooter!  I got on the phone with a friend who knew about finance, since every idea cost money to get going.  I landed in Seattle a few weeks later and started the franchise.  It ramped up over a year and before we knew it, we had enough money to finish the game and publishers contacting us.

A PS3 FPS Release Date Confirmed - Move Support, 60+ Maps...

Coffee Beans:
I'm now pleased to say that PS3 owners will only have to wait a little while longer to play a new FPS that has Sony Move(and Navigation) support, 60+ maps, a map editor, online multi-player, as well as a solid single-player offering.
What game am I talking about, and when will it release?

FPS Friday: Greg Hastings Paintball 2 - Super X Studios Interview Part II

Coffee Beans:
If you missed Part I of the interview with Super X Studios' President, James Thrush, you can read that HERE.
Part II of the interview is below, and it is the remaining portion of the interview with James Thrush.

Interview Q&A Part II:
CoffeeWithGames:  The players/teams in Greg Hastings Paintball 2 are all real-world paintball players, correct?  What was the process of deciding which real-world players/teams made it into the game?

James Thrush:  Absolutely, every one of them (except for one cat!).  We set up a photo booth at several large paintball events for a year or so during development, and opened it up to any teams and players who wanted to be in the game.  They just had to sign a release and stats form, and get their picture taken.  We wound up with 1,262 people in the game!  We did it partially to add authenticity, but also as a giant thank-you to the paintball community.  I mean, who doesn't want to be in a video game?!?

FPS Friday - FEATURE Interview! Greg Hastings Paintball 2 - Part I

Coffee Beans:
After I finished playing Greg Hastings Paintball 2's Career mode a few weeks back, I contacted the developer of the game, Super X Studios.  I was really impressed by the amount of content in the game, and you can watch my "Video Preview and Impressions" of the game HERE!

Not only did the developer respond to my email, but Greg Hastings himself, responded!  I ended up sending over some questions to Super X Studios about the game, and to Greg Hastings as well.  Being that there were multiple questions/answers, I'm splitting the interviews up over a few weeks, that way they don't get lost after just one post.
So, if have a question about Greg Hastings Paintball 2, and it's not answered in this portion, definitely leave a comment and I can let you know if it'll perhaps be posted in the next few weeks.

Part I of the interview is below, and this portion is with Super X Studios' James Thrush (JT).  So, without further delay, let's get started!

Interview Q&A:
CoffeeWithGames:  First, thanks for taking the time for the interview.  Can you tell the readers a little about what you do at Super X Studios, and how you were involved in developing Greg Hastings Paintball 2?

James Thrush:  I'm James Thrush, founder and President of Super X Studios.  I've known Greg for six years now - I got the chance to help out on the original Greg Hastings Tournament Paintball games for the Xbox and PS2, and fell in love with the franchise.  When it was time to make the sequel, and the previous developers bowed out, Greg came to me and it was an easy sell to get us on board!

Filtered Thoughts
I finished the "Career Mode" in Greg Hastings Paintball 2 on March 30 this year, and I was really impressed by the amount of content in the game, so I decided to make video on it.

I started editing the video together last Thursday night, and what I thought would be a 2 day project, turned into basically a 7 day project.

As I said in the video, if anybody has any questions about Greg Hastings Paintball 2 on the Wii, that I didn't answer in the video, or previous posts; please leave a comment on this post with your question, or send an email to Scott(@)CoffeewithGames.com(remove the ( ) from around the @).

Also, if you liked the video, or didn't like something in the video, please leave a comment/feedback letting me know.

Questions
Have any of you played Greg Hastings Paintball 2 on the Wii or Xbox 360?  If so, what are your thoughts on the game?  If you haven't played it, are you perhaps looking at getting the game when it releases on the PS3 soon?

Greg Hastings' Paintball 2 - Local Multi-Player Footage & Thoughts

Coffee Beans:
Back in October, my wife and I tried the local multi-player in Greg Hastings' Paintball 2.  She doesn't really play FPS games, so she used the Classic Controller control options, because I thought the controls would be easier for her to learn.  We played a few rounds so she could get acquainted with the controls; and after playing a few rounds by ourselves, we then played a few with bots on each of our teams.

Before we get to the video of the local multi-player in Greg Hastings Paintball 2, let's take a look at some features for the game's local multi-player.
Greg Hastings Paintball 2 offers the same nine match types in its local multi-player, that are found in the game's "Single Player Exhibition" mode:
  • Elimination
  • Two Flag CTF
  • Single CTF
  • Point Capture
  • Assault
  • Recon
  • Sniper
  • X-Ball
  • RaceTo

As for the options available to adjust in Greg Hastings' Paintball 2 local multi-player, here's a brief breakdown:
  • Gear Bag - Where you choose which paintball gun, barrel, mask, loader, etc., you will use in the matches
  • Options - General options tab, allowing you to choose match types, location & field, number of rounds, time limit, and team size
  • Bots - Select which difficulty you want the bots to be; five skill levels available to choose from
  • Equipment - Allows you to toggle pistols and grenades on/off; also allows you to choose between five different paint supply options for the matches: Standard, Blackjack, Single hopper/clip, Single Pod, Infinite
  • Rules - This section allows you to toggle options like Friendly Fire and Cheating on/off.  You can also select the weather & wind options here as well
  • Start - Starts the match!
Below is the video of me versus Mrs. CoffeewithGames.  When you watch the video, I was the top screen - Player 1; she was the bottom screen - Player 2.  The location we were playing in the video was D-Day Adventure Park, in Wyandotte, Oklahoma.

Video & Paintball Field Info:
The match was a "Two Flag CTF", which is when both teams have a flag on opposite sides of the field; with the objective being to "capture the flag" of the opposing team, and return it to your base.
While the location we were playing at was D-Day Adventure Park, the field/map we were on was Normandy.  D-Day Adventure Park has five fields/maps in the splitscreen multi-player, in Greg Hastings Paintball 2:
  • Airfield
  • Sainte-Mere-Eglise
  • Pegasus Bridge
  • Omaha Beach
  • Normandy
If you're wondering what some fields at D-Day Adventure Park actually look like in real life, and if the game portrays them accurately, here are two quick images from their site, DDayAdventurePark.com.
Used with permission.  Click to enlarge.
You can find many more pictures directly at their site, and if you didn't know, D-Day Adventure Park has the tagline and is known as being, "Home of the World's Largest Paintball Event!"  If you are new to the world of paintball, you may be interested in participating at D-Day Adventure Park's 2011 event from June 6 through June 12, 2011.  You can find more information at DDayAdventurePark.com, or HERE.

Thoughts:
The local multi-player in Greg Hastings Paintball 2, on the Wii, has a crazy number of locations and maps you can play in.  There are twelve different locations, each having between 3-6 fields/maps.  You read that right, the game has more than 36 fields/maps for the local multi-player option.  While some maps are the same fields just expanded/roped off, or speedball courses with re-arranged bunkers, each field can be played with different strategies depending on the match type, objectives, and whether or not bots are being used.
While the local multi-player is limited to two players, I think the ability to include bots was a great choice by the development team.  The bots really do add a challenge to the game, and can help even out the matches for inexperienced FPS gamers.  Going into the matches against Mrs. CwG, I thought I would easily win.  When we added bots to the matches, not all worked out as I thought; as the video shows.
Depending on the experience of the player, you can select between five different experience settings for the bots.

One issue we did notice was hit detection.  We experimented with shooting each other at close range, and it was interesting because when we were at point-blank range, the paintballs wouldn't hit us; it was like they were going directly around/through us.
Now, it may have been a development choice to not register point-blank shots, because usually when participating in paintball events, a general rule is to try not to shoot an opponent at point-blank range.

If anybody has any specific questions about Greg Hastings Paintball 2 on the Wii, please let me know.  I am still working my way through the game's single-player campaign, and once I finish it, I should have a more detailed video preview up for the game.

    Questions:
Have any of you been to D-Day Adventure Park?  If so, what were you experiences there?  If you own Greg Hastings Paintball 2 on the Wii, what do you think of the local multi-player experience the game offers?

If you are interested in Greg Hastings Paintball 2, the game is currently available on the Wii and Xbox 360, shown below.  The PS3 version will be releasing on the PSN in the near future.

Greg Hastings Paintball 2 - 4 vs 4 Online Point Capture Round

    Coffee Beans:
Here is a video showing off another online match in Greg Hastings Paintball 2 for the Nintendo Wii.  The details for this match were:
    • Map: National Paintball Fields - Trenches
    • Match Type - Point Capture.  Reinsertion - Yes. 5 Seconds
    • Best 2 of 3.  5 minute rounds.

    Coffee Cup:

This game-play video was a 4 versus 4 round, not an entire match.
If you're wondering what equipment/gear I was using in the round, here is what I know from what's listed in the game:
    Barrel - Stiffi MF
    Pods - R7 Titan

The teams for this match were:
    Red Team -
    Coffee Beans! (this is me)
    liz
    rt
    critical

    Blue Team -
    FIRECRACKERS
    spesel teme
    Unnamed Team
    THESCKULLES

The Tiberius T4 with First Strike seems to be an extremely accurate paintball gun in Greg Hastings Paintball 2, and also in real life.  I watched a video showing how accurate the gun is, and it appears to be  incredibly accurate, at some long distances.
Anyway, I really liked this level design, and you may see in a future game-play video that the trenches do help provide cover and a good way to move around the field.

If anybody has any questions about Greg Hastings Paintball 2 on the Wii, you can leave the question(s) in the comment section, or send me an email to Scott@CoffeewithGames.com.

If you are interested in Greg Hastings Paintball 2 for either the Wii or Xbox 360, you can see prices for both versions on Amazon.com linked below.  I am also including a link to the Tiberius T4 with First Strike if you want to see how much it is in real-life!

Greg Hastings Paintball 2 - 4 vs 4 Online CTF Matches

    Coffee Beans:
This post includes a video showing off game-play footage from online matches in Greg Hastings Paintball 2, for the Wii.  The matches shown were played on Skirmish USA's Tunnel Town map.  I checked Skirmish.com, to look for real-life photos of the field, and the only one I found was:
Skirmish.com has the field titled, "The Tunnels", so I'm not 100% positive it's the same one, but I think it is.
The rounds, "Best 2 of 3", were Single Capture-the-Flag(CTF).  If you were marked or "eliminated", you were reinserted into the map after about a 5 second spawn time.
I believe the players I played the matches with were:

    • Unnamed Team
    • liz
    • spesel teme
    • critical
    • rt
    • FIRECRACKERS
    • destroyers
I don't know any of them in real-life, but perhaps I'll end up playing with them again in the future.  Here are two of the rounds we played:

Saturday was the first day I was able to get into an online match, that had 4 players on each team.  If you play online, you may notice when you shoot somebody sometimes it can take a few seconds after you shoot them, for the "elimination" to be confirmed.  I can't tell if it is latency/hit-detection issues, or if the players I shoot sometimes are using the "wipe" function to try and stay in the match longer.
Around 1:38 in the video, you can see an instance where I was shot, and it takes about 5 seconds for me to be "eliminated", because I didn't call myself out and I didn't try to "wipe" the hit off.  I just kept advancing away from where I had been hit, getting the flag further toward our goal.  When I watched that again, it makes me want to think the delay in eliminations is not hit-detection or latency issues, but actually the way it is designed.
The matches themselves seemed to run pretty smoothly on my end, and I really like the level designs for some of the fields.
If anybody has any specific questions about Greg Hastings Paintball 2 on the Wii, let me know!

Greg Hastings Paintball 2 - Match Types

    Quick Brew Info & Video:
I have done a few previews on Greg Hastings Paintball 2 so far.  I have had different questions asked about GHP2, and have tried answering them.  If any of you still have questions, that I may have missed and not answered, feel free to ask them again.
A few people have been wanting to see different match types and courses, and this is a new one in.  The video below is of a Woodsball match, in Greg Hastings Paintball 2 on the Wii.  It is specifically a Woodsball Sniper match, that takes place at Field Hemlock(I think this is the real life field) at Skirmish USA.

Greg Hastings Paintball 2 has three "Event Branches", or match types, in the game:

    • Tournament Speedball
    • Recball
    • Tournament Woodsball
I can't say which match/mode is my favorite yet, but I have enjoyed the match types I have played so far.  I look forward to playing more of GHP2 this weekend, and hopefully I'll play some more match types and modes.

I added my friend code for Greg Hastings Paintball 2 to my "Contact Information & System Tags" page, so if you get the game and want my friend code; that's an easy place to find it.  If you have GHP2 already, my friend code is 3696-5848-4525.  If you add me, send me an email or leave a comment with your friend code, so I can add your friend code also.

Greg Hastings Paintball 2: Online Multi-player Match

    Quick Brew Info & Video:
Here is footage from an online multiplayer match in Greg Hastings Paintball 2; it was one of the first online matches I was able to get into.

As I mentioned in my first preview of GHP2 last week, it was released for the Xbox 360 and the Wii.  The Xbox 360 version of Greg Hastings Paintball 2 supports up to 20 players on Xbox Live, while the Wii version supports up to 8 players via Nintendo WFC.
Getting into online matches right now on the Wii is hit or miss.  I may be picking the wrong times to try to play online matches though, as I have yet played a 4-versus-4 match.

If anybody has any questions about Greg Hastings Paintball 2 for the Wii, let me know as I am working on putting together a more detailed "preview" of the game, and I will try to answer any questions in the preview.

You can see prices listed for Greg Hastings Paintball 2 on the Wii and Xbox 360 on Amazon.com listed below:

Greg Hastings Paintball 2: X-Ball Round

    Quick Brew Info & Video:
Here is a quick video showing one round from an X-Ball match in Greg Hastings Paintball 2 for the Wii.

The X-Ball round, in the video above, was played in a Greg Hastings Paintball 2 "Single Player Exhibition" match.
If you aren't familiar with what X-Ball(XBall?) is in paintball, you can read about it here!

Greg Hastings Paintball 2 offers several match types, in the "Single Player Exhibition".  You can choose between nine different match types, for an exhibition match:
    • Elimination
    • Two Flag CTF
    • Single CTF
    • Point Capture
    • Assault
    • Recon
    • Sniper
    • X-Ball
    • RaceTo

    Question:
Has anybody else picked up the Xbox 360 or Wii version yet?  If you own the Wii version, let me know if you want to try and get into an online match together.

If you are interested in Greg Hastings Paintball 2, for either the Wii or Xbox 360, you can see prices on Amazon.com linked below:

Quick Brew Preview: Greg Hastings Paintball 2 (Wii)

    Coffee Beans
Greg Hastings Paintball 2 was released on the Xbox 360 and Wii, this past Tuesday(9-28-10).  The game has a MSRP of just $39.99 on both systems.

This "Quick Brew Preview" is for the Wii version of Greg Hastings Paintball 2 (GHP2).

    Quick Brew Info

The tutorial is the first option the game gives players, but you can choose to skip the tutorial if you don't want to go through it.  I would suggest playing through it though, as it will give you a chance to learn what buttons and motion controls do certain actions in the game.

After I played through the tutorial, I selected my team and played a few rounds of single-player Woodsball.  While playing, I used the Wii Remote and Nunchuk controls; and I am still learning the controls, as there is a lot of depth to them.

You can lean in-and-out of cover, switch which hand you carry the paintball gun in, even slide and dive(yes, two separate actions) behind cover on the paintball fields.

Greg Hastings Paintball 2 for the Wii, offers five controller options:
    • Wii Remote & Nunchuk
    • Wii Zapper Control
    • Classic Controller
    • Classic Controller Pro
    • GameCube Controller

    Caffeinated Thoughts
I believe Greg Hastings Paintball 2 is the first Wii FPS type game, to offer Classic Controller, Classic Controller Pro, and GameCube Controller control options(if anybody can think of another Wii FPS that does, leave a comment).

I thought it was interesting to see what happened when I tried to "wiping off" being hit by a paintball, and how the game discourages cheating.

GHP2 seems to be offering quite a bit of features, and I will be covering more of the game in the next few days/weeks.  If anybody has anything specific you would like to know about the Wii version, leave a comment or send me an email to Scott@CoffeewithGames.com, and I will do my best to answer it.

    Question
Has anybody picked up the Xbox 360 or Wii version of Greg Hastings Paintball 2?  If you purchased the Wii version, definitely send me an email, or leave a comment, so we can try to play some online matches.

If you are interested in Greg Hastings Paintball 2, for either the Xbox 360 or the Wii, you can see prices on Amazon.com linked below:
