The Hours of Extraction - Dead Space Extraction's Hours Report

Dead Space 2 released just a few weeks ago on the PS3, and if you're a PS3 owner and you picked up the Dead Space 2 Collector's Edition, you're probably aware you also now own Dead Space Extraction.

If you're a PS3 owner and you didn't purchase the Dead Space 2 Collector's Edition, but you are interested in Dead Space Extraction, the good news is you can download the game from the PlayStation Store for just $14.99.

Now, you may be wondering, "Is Dead Space Extraction really worth it?" or, "How many hours can I expect from it?"

Well, being that Dead Space Extraction was originally released on the Nintendo Wii back in September of 2009, we can use the data reported through the Nintendo Channel to get a good idea of how many hours of game-play you can expect.

How many hours have Wii owners spent blasting Necromorphs in Dead Space Extraction with 525 days of game-play reported, and how many hours can you expect if you're just picking it up?  Let's take a look!

Dead Space Extraction has approximately 31,369 Wii owners that have reported their game-play data through the Nintendo Channel.

Reporting Player Increase
How many more players are reporting their play-time data since we last looked at Dead Space Extraction's play-time? Dead Space Extraction has seen an increase of about 13,866 more players reporting game-play data, since July 5, 2010.

Average & Total Game-Play Hours Reported
Dead Space Extraction has 221,980 Total Hours of game-play reported, an increase of 102,523 Total Hours in the last 246 days reported. Dead Space Extraction's average play-time is 7 Hours 5 Minutes "Per person" reporting data.

The average play-time per session for Dead Space Extraction on the Wii is just over 1 Hour 48 Minutes. This means Wii owners average almost 2 hours each time they play Dead Space Extraction, but it appears once they complete the game, they don't really go back to it.

Dead Space Extraction's Amazon.com sale rank is #1,546, and it is currently selling for $19.49. (Sale rank and advertised price recorded around 4:30PM on 3-9-11.)

Dead Space Extraction has a 4 out of 5 Stars rating on Amazon.com, based on 57 customer reviews. Dead Space Extraction's customer review score average is 79.29%, when converted to a 100% review scale.

I actually rented Dead Space Extraction for the Wii, but only played it once, and not for very long.  Here's my Dead Space Extraction reported game-play data for the Wii version:

As you can see, my reported time is a lot lower than the overall average.

Filtered Thoughts
When Dead Space Extraction was released on the Wii, it released with a MSRP of $49.99. While Wii owners probably got the short end of the Necromorph deal with the original $50 price tag on the game, you can now find the Wii retail version for under $30.

I didn't really give Dead Space Extraction a chance, but both the Wii and PS3(so far) versions have been received pretty well by the gaming press, with the PS3 version of Dead Space Extraction having a "professional" review score average of 84.33%, based on 3 reviews on GameRankings.com.

I think it's safe to say you can expect to get at least 7-10 hours of game-play from Dead Space Extraction on the PS3, especially with the challenge mode and the Trophies to obtain, based on the average reported by Wii owners.

If you're a PS3 owner with the Sony Move bundle and you're looking for a new game to play with it, based on the game-play hours reported and the review score averages for the game, I don't think you can go wrong with purchasing Dead Space Extraction for under $20.

House of the Dead Overkill's review score average is 81.09%, based on 55 reviews.
Dead Space Extraction's review score average is 83.81%, based on 58 reviews.
Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles' review score average is 74.54%, based on 40 reviews.

GameRankings.com has done some adjusting since April, and while none of the games gained a review score; Dead Space: Extraction had one taken away from its average, which caused its average to slightly increase.
House of the Dead: Overkill still has the same 55 reviews from April, but the score has been adjusted up slightly, from its April score.
Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles remains the same.

Thoughts:
I think of all Wii games that are likely to be ported to the PS3 now, because of Sony's Move controller, it will be rail shooters that are on the Wii.
At E3, Sony announced that Dead Space: Extraction will be releasing on the PS3 with Move support, via a Dead Space 2 Limited Edition package.

If Sony is already working with EA on bringing Dead Space: Extraction to the PS3 as an "exclusive" with Dead Space 2, I would think they are going to try and get new games and bundle them with older games as well.

I can see a new House of the Dead game being developed in "HD" for the PS3, and House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return, as well as House of the Dead: Overkill, included as "bonus" material.

I find House of the Dead: Overkill's Amazon.com sale rank really impressive compared to Dead Space: Extraction's and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles'.

I don't know if it's simply the price of House of the Dead: Overkill being lower, or because the House of the Dead name is associated with rail shooters, as to why House of the Dead: Overkill is performing so well on Amazon.com.

Question:
Sega released House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return($16.00 new now!) on the Wii in March 2008 and House of the Dead: Overkill was released on the Wii in February 2009.

House of the Dead: Overkill had 315,323 Total Hours reported this week, an increase of 6,064 hours from last week.

Dead Space: Extraction had 62,638 Total Hours reported this week, an increase of 2,698 from last week.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles had 141,084 Total Hours reported this week, an increase of 10,544 hours from last week.

Amazon.com Sales Rank:

House of the Dead: Overkill's Amazon.com sale rank is #231 and its advertised selling price is $14.79.

Dead Space: Extraction's Amazon.com sale rank is #897 and its advertised selling price is $29.96.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles' sale rank is #875 and its advertised selling price is $46.31.

House of the Dead: Overkill's review score average is 80.80%, based on 55 reviews.

Dead Space: Extraction's review score average is 83.75% based on 59 reviews.

Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles' review score average is 74.54% based on 40 reviews.

Thoughts:

You may have noticed, this week I've rearranged a bit.  I'll be tracking the "rail" shooters from 2009 that were released on the Wii in 2009, together in one group, and I'll track the "FPS" shooters on their own.

I do find it interesting that Dead Space: Extraction has the highest review score average and the highest number of reviews, but it has the lowest sales rank currently on Amazon.com and the lowest "total hours" reported.  I wonder if perhaps it's because Dead Space: Extraction was a first time for the franchise on the Wii and it didn't have enough advertising?

I don't know how much advertising House of the Dead: Overkill and Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles had compared to Dead Space: Extraction, or even each other.

Dead Space Extraction (Wii): Data Debut, Sale Rank, Review Score Average

Dead Space Extraction finally debuted with data today on the Nintendo Channel!  Let's take a look!

Nintendo Channel Data Breakdown

Number of Players Reporting Data:

Dead Space Extraction was released on September 29, 2009.  It had 7,884 players reporting data on the Wii's Nintendo Channel for it's debut this week.

"Total" Game-Play Hours Reported:
Dead Space Extraction had 50,117 Total Hours reported for it's debut.

GameRankings.com Review Score Average:
Dead Space Extraction is sitting with an average review score of 83.69%, off 58 reviews.  The game seemed to have been well received considering it wasn't like the original Dead Space with free movement, and was on-rails instead.

Amazon.com Sales Rank:

Dead Space Extraction's Amazon.com sale rank was #746 and the current selling price is $27.99.

The game did release in September with a MSRP of $49.99, but has since dropped down to a MSRP of $29.99.

Thoughts:

Dead Space Extraction took a while to debut, but it finally has numbers providing some data and I find it interesting.

The game-play hours "Per-Person" are averaged at only 6 Hrs. 22 Min. for Dead Space Extraction.  The big thing the "Per-Person" numbers show is that Wii owners that played the game, seemingly only played it once.  This seems to go along with reviews that I read for the game, in which most said the game has little replay value and was only 5-8 hours in length.

I thought it was interesting Dead Space Extraction debuted today, because I actually rented the game this morning before I even checked the Nintendo Channel for the data.  After/if I finish, I may write-up my impressions of the game.

Questions:

Did you play Dead Space Extraction?  If so, what did you think about the game?  Did you only play it once, and then set it aside, or do you find yourself going back to play the game more?  I wonder if the short length of play and/or that the game was an "on-rails" shooter are the reasons why the game sold poorly, or perhaps it was a lack of marketing?
